Copperworks Distilling Releases Double Peated Whiskey

Copperworks Distilling Co. of Seattle announced the release of Copperworks Double Peated Whiskey. This single cask release (Release 036) was crafted through an inspired blend of old and new-world malt whiskey production techniques, resulting in a whiskey that is far smokier than any of the distillery’s previous releases.

Copperworks Double Peated Whiskey gets its peat flavor from two sources: the barley and a cask. A few years ago, Copperworks received a cask from one of its partners in the U.K. that was especially rich in peat flavor after aging Ardbeg Whisky in Scotland. It was the perfect opportunity to try the “double peat” concept.

Copperworks started with its Washington Peated Single Malt Whiskey, made from locally grown barley malted with peat from a bog in Washington State. That whiskey matured for 45 months in new American oak and then it was finished for an additional seven months in the Ardbeg cask to create R036. The Copperworks Washington Peated Whiskey brings savory and earthy notes to this new release and the Ardbeg cask layers on more traditional Islay Scotch smokiness. A sweetness from the new American Oak cask balances the heavy smoke from the Ardbeg cask.

Copperworks Double Peated Whiskey offers aromas of driftwood campfire, leather, and creosote. Flavors include a sweet, demerara sugar entry leading to notes of candied orange peel and seaweed. The finish is minty, ashy, earthy, and briny, while still sweet and silky.
