Shmaltz Brewing Co. of Troy, New York, announced the release of Shmaltz Liquor Small Batch Number One.
In an email, owner Jeremy Cowan said the 88-proof spirit consists of four years of Jewbelation Anniversary beers distilled at St. George Spirits in 2010. It was aged for nine years in Pappy Van Winkle and Buffalo Trade barrels, and blended by Yankee Distillers.
The limited release, according to Cowan, is not a bourbon, not a scotch, not a rye, not a gin—but has elements of all. “Shmaltz Liquor Small Batch Number One tastes of rich complex malts from the Jewbelation base beer—two row, caramel, kiln amber, and so many more,” wrote Cowan. “The finish shines with herbal, earthy spices referencing the wild hop bill from the Anniversary beers. One of a kind and of course in my biased option, delicious. Perfect served neat as is or on the rocks – or in cocktails—so fun to be eclectic and creative.”
