Distillers in California received a 90-day extension to continue offering their spirits via direct-to-consumer (DtC) shipping.
As part of emergency declarations due to COVID-19, distillers in the Golden State were allowed to ship directly to consumers, but the provision was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2021. Hours before that deadline, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control announced the extension, which grants distillers DtC shipping powers until March 31, 2022.
According to the California Artisanal Distillers Guild, halting DtC shipping will wipe away an estimated 25% of revenue from distillers participating in DtC shipping. “Through the ongoing efforts of the guild and our industry partners we’ve managed to secure what we hope will be enough time to urgently pass our DTC Shipping bill through the legislature by March 31st, 2022,” the guild shared via a release.
