Tales of the Cocktail Foundation Announces New Board Members

Tales of the Cocktail Foundation (TOTCF) is pleased to announce the addition of four new board members to its Board of Directors: John Gakuru, Tess Posthumus, Perry Sholes, and Claire Warner. Following an extensive search and selection process conducted by TOTCF leadership and committee co-chairs, the four candidates were chosen based on their deep professional experience, diverse industry perspectives, and alignment with the goals and values of the Foundation. The new board members join current TOTCF Board of Directors Co-Chairs Gary Solomon, Jr. and Neal Bodenheimer, Treasurer Gary Solomon, Sr., and CEO Eileen Wayner in leading the Foundation.

“We are honored to welcome John, Tess, Perry, and Claire to Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Board of Directors,” said Board of Directors Co-Chair Gary Solomon, Jr. “Each of these individuals brings a dynamic and impressive perspective to the board and their collective experience will be indispensable in helping us further the Foundation’s mission to Educate, Advance, and Support our global cocktail community.”

Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Board of Directors serves to promote and implement the Foundation’s mission, while also serving as global ambassadors for the organization. The Board of Directors oversees the Foundation’s operational activities including strategy development and execution, policy, and serving as a fiduciary. Gakuru, Warner, and Posthumus will serve an initial term of three years, while Sholes will serve on the board for an initial term of two years. Staggered board terms allow for a seamless transition amongst the group, and each board member will have the option to renew for one additional three-year term once their initial term is complete.

As a core pillar of the Foundation’s values, TOTCF pledges to foster inclusivity and diversity within its organization, promoting individuals from a variety of backgrounds, qualifications, and perspectives. Through the leadership of each of the Board of Directors board members, TOTCF aims to highlight progressive attitudes and elevate a variety of distinct voices and cultures. The TOTCF Board of Directors is proudly comprised of seven professionals who reflect an array of nationalities, sexualities, genders, and races and hail from all around the globe.

“Our goal at Tales of the Cocktail Foundation is to ensure that all external and internal aspects of the Foundation are reflective of the wonderfully diverse and experienced community we support,” said CEO Eileen Wayner. “We are thrilled to welcome this incredible group of new board members to our Board of Directors, and we look forward to continued progress as a team.”

TOTCF’s Board of Directors, including the new board members, will be in attendance at the 20 year anniversary Tales of the Cocktail® (TOTC) conference, which is returning for an in-person celebration in New Orleans from July 25-29, 2022. John Gakuru

John Gakuru, born in Kenya, raised in England, and now residing in Los Angeles, is a man who has known many continents and pursued many roles in the spirits industry. Gakuru got his first taste of the liquor business behind the bar, where he was responsible for managing Lab Bar, a renowned destination for drinks in London’s posh Soho District. While pursuing this role in the earliest days of the classic cocktail renaissance, he was sought out by the Brazilian-based brand, Sagatiba Cachaça, where he joined the team as their Global Brand Ambassador, later carving out a seven-year position that took the spirit label from small, South American production, to a recognizable name on six continents. He then moved on to spend six years with Think Spirits in Australia as their On-Premise Manager and Trade Marketing Manager. In this role, he was instrumental in the company by becoming a Top 10 distributor in the nation where he oversaw the trade communications, brand activity, and events of some thirty-five premium  spirit brands in the Think Spirits’ portfolio. Gakuru joined Sweet&Chilli Australia in late 2016, before emigrating to the USA in April 2017, where he is currently the Director of Sales & Marketing. In this current role, Gakuru brings an incredible two decades of experience both behind the bar, and on the world stage, in distribution and brand growth. In his most recent role, Gakuru, working with business partner Emily Wheldon, created Coruscent Co. The vision and mission of the brand are to leave the people, places, and products in better shape than they were found. Coruscent Co. is truly the nascent result of all his years of hard work, and is capable of many things, including crafting and executing world-class events, helping other brands gain the traction they need with consumers and the trade, as well as forging lasting client relationships and international relations. When he’s not at work, you’ll usually find John Gakuru planning his next scuba diving holiday or sipping a Negroni, Espresso Martini, or glass of red wine in one of LA’s great bars. While the world has provided a playground for him to learn and grow in his own industry, these days he’s ultimately excited to be behind the scenes of some of America’s most illustrious parties, brands, and brand experiences.

Today she is best known as the creator and co-founder of Aecorn, the world’s first range of British non-alcoholic aperitifs and sister brand to Seedlip, the non-alcoholic category pioneer.

Beginning her corporate career in 2003 with LVMH/Belvedere Vodka and after a successful tenure as their global brand ambassador, she was appointed Head of Spirit Creation and Mixology in 2009. Aimed at promoting concepts and strategies for longevity in a demanding industry where alcohol takes centre stage, Warner has long championed bartender wellness and pioneered a movement towards a more natural approach to food and drinks, as well as advocated for a ‘positive drinking’ movement, championing lower ABV options for consumers, and advocating for less sugar and greater options for those who choose to drink less alcohol.
