Virunga Mountain Spirits Launches in Rwanda

Virunga Mountain Spirits, a new premium craft spirits producer, puts Rwanda on the map with its immersive agrotourism experience at its distillery and tasting room in Musanze, located at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, opening Dec. 12.

Kari Vodka, the distillery’s flagship potato vodka and world-class facility celebrates Rwanda’s craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit. From field to bottle, the immersive experience offers a refined, authentic journey—rooted in local tradition and elevated for the global traveler. The business honors the legacy of women in alcohol production, both in Rwanda and globally, and tells a story of heritage and innovation in every sip.

“Our vision goes beyond making great vodka. We want to show the world a different side of Rwanda—not as a place defined by its past, but as a source of inspiration, quality, and craft,” says Karen Sherman, CEO of Virunga Mountain Spirits.

The purity of Musanze’s gravity-fed volcanic water and its mineral-rich soil create exceptional Kinigi potatoes that enhance Kari Vodka’s smoothness and flavor. Made from “unloved” potatoes sourced from local farmer cooperatives and Winnaz/Hollanda Fairfoods, Kari Vodka (80 proof) will soon be available in stores, restaurants, bars, and venues across the country.

Before visiting, guests can book a tour and tasting to observe the process firsthand through sight, taste, and touch. The experience includes a guided tour of the distillery and demonstration farm, along with a tasting of Kari Vodka. Guests can enhance their visit with optional add-ons, such as a Vodka Tasting Menu or farm to fork Meal Package. Craft Kari Vodka cocktails are also available for purchase.

Kinigi Grill, and the gift shop that features keepsakes made by outstanding makers in Rwanda are open for guests during regular business hours. The gift shop also carries Virunga Mountain Spirits merchandise and Kari Vodka.

Virunga Mountain Spirits will celebrate its grand opening on Dec. 12, welcoming credentialed press members and local guests.
