Copperworks Reveals Three New Mainstay Single Malt Whiskeys

Renowned for crafting individually numbered, batch-style releases that offer whiskey enthusiasts a unique journey of discovery, Seattle-based Copperworks Distilling Co. announced the addition of three permanent and always-available new expressions to its lineup.

The new Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey lineup now features the following three standard products ongoing:

Maltsmith—Crafted from a brewer-style recipe combining pale malt and caramelized malts, the Maltsmith is Copperworks’ flagship American Single Malt Whiskey.

Farmsmith—Celebrating the barley fields of Washington by showcasing the impact of single variety, single farm, and single growing year barley in this ever-changing whiskey.

Peatsmith—Exploring the unique flavors that local smoke contributes to Copperworks’ whiskey, Peatsmith is crafted from barley malted with smoke from peat harvested from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, offering a smoky profile distinct from traditional peated whiskeys.

“Our new permanent Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey lineup celebrates and solidifies the concepts we’ve been refining since our founding,” said Copperworks co-founder, co-owner and president Jason Parker.

“Each of these new expressions features their own unique characteristics and tasting notes, providing whiskey aficionados with a range of options to explore and enjoy,” said Copperworks Distilling Co. co-owner and vice president Jeff Kanof.

The following details are provided by Parker and Kanof:

Maltsmith

Maltsmith is distilled from a brewer-style recipe that combines pale malt and caramelized malts, then matures in charred new American oak casks to create our flagship American Single Malt Whiskey. Developed by our founders and known previously as our “Five Malt” recipe, this whiskey has been a cornerstone of our offerings since our beginnings.

While focusing on charred new American oak, we incorporate a handful of refilled casks into the initial batch to highlight the recipe’s nuances. This first batch comprises 14 new oak casks and 6 refilled Copperworks American Single Malt Whiskey casks.

Tasting Notes

The nose is bright, deep, and inviting offering up scents of peach skin, citrus oil, spiced apple, buckwheat honey, and salt water taffy. The mouthfeel it is both bright and sweet with notes of orange oil, sweet cinnamon, burned butter, leather, eucalyptus, and peach. The finish is long and leaves you with soft oak, sweet cream, pink peppercorn and stonefruit.

Farmsmith

Farmsmith celebrates the barley fields of Washington by exploring the impact of single variety, single farm, and single growing year barley in this ever-changing whiskey. While this expression will always be part of our lineup, each release will feature a different barley varietal, farm, and/or growing year.

The initial Farmsmith batch is distilled from Baronesse barley, known for its exceptional quality and rich, malty flavor. This barley was grown at Joseph’s Grainery in Colfax and malted by LINC Malt in Spokane. Crafted from 8 casks, all Kelvin Cooperage char #3, this batch matured for just under 3 and a half years.

Tasting Notes

The nose is an enticing blend of custard apple, lemon curd, and orange marmalade, complemented by rich toffee and crème Brûlée. On the palate, it offers a complex mix of pine sap, brown sugar cinnamon, and cherry, layered with earthy undertones, orange oil, dates, and salted caramel. The finish is long, leaving traces of sweet tea, graham cracker, sweet cinnamon, and a hint of sweet pepper.

Peatsmith

Peatsmith explores the unique flavors that local smoke contributes to our whiskey. Crafted from barley malted with smoke from peat harvested from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Peatsmith offers a smoky profile that is both mellow and distinct from traditional peated whiskeys. The local peat imparts a rich, earthy character, complemented by subtle notes of campfire, brine, and hickory, making it a uniquely American version of a peated whiskey.

The peat is harvested from nearby Shelton, WA. The initial release is crafted from 7 casks, all char #3 from Kelvin Cooperage, and matured for just under 3 and a half years.

Tasting Notes

The nose balances fruit, grain, and smoke with smoked orange peel, driftwood beach fire, extinguished coals, and toasted brioche. On the palate, it delivers a robust mix of vanilla cake chocolate frosting, sweet mint, damp earth, and cured tobacco, enhanced by cedar, hickory, hot smoked salmon, and salted almonds. The finish is complex and lingering, with notes of peppery menthol, lime leaf, leather, and barbecue bark.
