Laws Whiskey House of Denver announces the launch of its limited-edition Experiential Series Ruby Port Finished Bourbon, adding another expression of Laws’ classic Four Grain Straight Bourbon finished in Ruby Port casks. The latest offering in the brand’s Experiential Barrel Series, and the newest holiday release, Laws Ruby Port Finished Bourbon will be available in limited quantities in selected markets for a suggested retail price of $75.
All of the grains used in Laws’ whiskeys are milled, cooked, fermented, distilled and aged on-site and they are grown and harvested from family-owned Colorado Farms. Laws’ traditional practice of open-air, on-grain fermentation captures the essence of Colorado’s terroir while the copper pot-column still produces a robust, grain-forward style of whiskey.
Laws’ Ruby Port Cask Finish is made with the same bourbon mash bill as the Laws flagship Four Grain Straight Bourbon with 60 percent corn, 20 percent heirloom wheat, 10 percent heirloom rye, and 10 percent heirloom barley. It is aged over three years in new charred American oak barrels, finished in 225 liter Portuguese Ruby Port French Oak Casks for two years, and bottled at 95 proof.
Ruby Port is most commonly enjoyed as a dessert wine because of its richness and sweet characteristics. The classic Portuguese casks used to age Laws’ Ruby Port Finished Bourbon enhances the wonderful fruity notes of the Four Grain Straight Bourbon, resulting in a nose of golden raisins, figs, and dried cherries which flows into hints of plums and Christmas pudding. The whiskey finishes with nutmeg and light tannins for a unique drinking experience.
The Experiential Barrel Series is an initiative methodically built by Laws to explore flavor complexity and enhancement in their whiskies. It is a channel for the brand’s appreciation of intellectual curiosity, controlled experimentation, and continuous improvement. The Ruby Port Finished Bourbon joins the Sauternes Cask Finished Rye and Calvados Finished Bourbon in this season’s offerings from the series. Previous editions have included the Straight Wheat Whiskey Finished in Curaçao Casks and the Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Honey Casks. “We want to not only introduce drinkers to the robust flavors of Colorado but push the standards of whiskey to new levels,” said Al Laws, founder of Laws Whiskey House. “From this passion and drive we created the Experiential Series, allowing our talented and intellectually-curious Laws Village team to test different flavor profiles and present our heirloom grains in unique and exciting ways. The Ruby Port Finished Bourbon offers something exciting for those that like their whiskies a bit on the sweeter and fruiter side.”
In addition to the Experiential Series Ruby Port Finished Bourbon, Laws Whiskey House also launched a four-pack sampler for the holidays. Perfect for whiskey enthusiasts or whiskey curious drinkers, the sampler includes four 100 mL bottles with the two Laws’ standard expressions, the Four Grain Straight Bourbon and San Luis Valley Straight Rye, as well as two seasonal expressions, the Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey, which is made from a single season’s harvest of Centennial Wheat in the San Luis Valley, and the Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey, made from a low-yield barley that was kept from extinction by local Colorado farmers. Both the Centennial Straight Wheat and Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey are aged for at least four years in charred 53-gallon new American white oak barrels.
